Head to head review, the new affordable full screen displays
The 18:9 full screen display technology was previously the preserve of expensive high end devices. However, device makers are now extending the full screen spec to mid-range phones such at the Tecno Camon CM and the Infinix S3, a direct competitor to the Camon series on selfie photography and now on the full screen display arena. We look at these two devices both retailing below Sh16,000 depending on the outlet.
The device brings the highly acclaimed full screen display. It comes in 5.65 inches, HD+ resolution, 18:9 aspect ratio and NEG screen protection. The elongated screen fits in a plastic body whose size is similar to a traditional 5.2 inch screen device.
Since this is an S series Infinix, selfies are a key aspect. In line with that, the S3 comes with a whopping 20MP front camera with dual LED flash. The selfies produced are not only very detailed, but also rich in color. The rear settles for a 13MP shooter which makes photos that have well saturated colors especially making the greens and reds pop; night photos are great as well, with reduced noise.
The Inifnix S3 is the first in recent times to come with a Snapdragon processor, the 430 to be exact. It is coupled with 3GB RAM plus 32GB expandable internal storage, a 4GB/64GB version exists as well. The battery is also very generous; it’s huge 4000mAh with fast charging.
Other features include dual SIM support, a rear fingerprint facing reader and Android 8.0 Oreo running under the XOS3.0 interface to guarantee silky smooth performance.
Tecno’s CM screen extends to 5.7 inches at the same HD+ resolution. Tecno added a 2.5D slightly curved glass for extra premium feel.
Being a Camon series, the device brings a 13MP camera on the front side with an LED flash. The actual selfies are detailed and bright but can be a bit overexposed sometimes. The rear also has a 13MP camera with a total of four LED flashes. The resultant pictures forgo saturation for natural colors, and their flash is much stronger in night pictures.
The processor is a Mediatek 6737, quadcore CPU that is below the Camon CX series in terms of performance. It is also below the Snapdragon 430 in the Infinix S3. The Camon CM comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable storage, half of what the Infinix S3 offers. The setup is enough to run the HiOS based on Android 7.0 Nougat, but the apps keeps reloading when you do multitasking.
The rest of the features include a 3000mAh battery with no fast charge, a rear mounted fingerprint sensor, a plastic body which is disguised as metallic complete with antenna lines and all.
If you want the well-rounded device between the two, the Infinix S3 is the clear winner, it has glass protection, faster processor, more RAM, more storage, better camera performance, much bigger battery which has fast charge and ironically, and relatively cheaper. The only reason we would recommend Tecno is for the slightly better looking asthetics due to the 2.5D glass curvature and the faux metallic look and maybe the brighter flash. Otherwise, the Infinix S3 is the better bet.
